SIENA and SAN GIMIGNANO tour

Siena is an ancient medieval town built on three hills and surrounded by walls, which welcomes its visitors with the slogan, written on Camollia Gate: "Cor Magi tibi Seni pandit" (Siena opens her heart even more to this gate). The historic center of Siena, which keeps intact its medieval appearance with narrow streets and noble buildings, was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995. The heart, and the symbol of Siena, is without doubt Piazza del Campo, with the characteristic shape of a shell, on which stands the Palazzo Publico, a masterpiece of Gothic art, and in which the Palio is held, a secular holiday where the 17 districts of the city compete every July and August, in a horse race that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. San Gimignano, with its magnificent medieval thirteen towers that shoot up towards the sky, stands on a hill overlooking the beautiful landscape of the Val d'Elsa, in which alternate woods, vineyards and olive groves. Its historic center, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a perfect witness of a medieval town, with its appearance remaining virtually unchanged from the fourteenth century to the present. Since medieval times, San Gimignano has been a destination for travelers and pilgrims who reached Rome by the Via Francigena; between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the famous towers of San Gimignano were built; they symbolized the wealth of the merchants who lived there. In its golden age San Gimignano had as many as 72 towers, which earned it the nickname of "the city of 100 towers".
