VAL D'ORCIA tour

The Val d'Orcia is a valley that is located in Tuscany, in the province of Siena and takes its name from the river running through it. Since 2004 UNESCO has declared this area a World Heritage Site: this award has gone to add to the protected natural area of local interest, already received in 1999. Its landscapes, characterized by long rows of cypress trees, rolling hills, beautiful farmhouses and delightful medieval villages, have inspired writers and artists of all ages. All municipalities in the Val d'Orcia, besides the landscape, are also interesting from the historical-artistic aspect presenting architectonic relevances: medieval (XI-XIV century) and Renaissance (XV-XVI century). The most important are: San Quirico d'Orcia (la Collegiata, Palazzo Chigi and Horti Leonini), Pienza (the Cathedral, the Ammannati palace , Vescovile palace and Piccolomini palace) in Montalcino (the Rocca, the Town Hall, the Church St. Augustine). The Val d'Orcia, however, has not lost its agricultural nature. The wine, olive oil and cheese are just the major productions that bring to the fore these territories throughout Italy and the world, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Pienza Pecorino. The Val d'Orcia is also well know for its curative thermal waters.
